Abstract: The article studies the images of two towns, Warley and Dufton, in the famous novel by John Braine “Room at the Top” (1957). The authors of the article compare the images in question and find out the stylistic devices (metaphor, detachment, alliteration, polysyndeton, etc) that enabled John Braine to create two opposite literary images related to each other through the antithesis “life − death”, in which, in the hero’s view, the notion of life is associated with Warley, whereas the notion of death is implied by Dufton.

Investigating the Effect of Cultural Schemata Activation on EFL Learners’ Listening Comprehension

Abstract: This study tried to find the possible relationship between listeners' cultural schemata and its activation and their performance in EFL listening comprehension. The participants of this study were two groups of 37 Muslim Iranian students. Firstly, the students were divided into two groups of high and low proficiency. Then, they were exposed to two audio files, one about mosques and the other about cathedrals. In one of the classes the recording about the cathedrals was played first, but in the other the order was reversed. The collected data were inputted into the SPSS program. The null hypothesis of the study was whether listening to a culturally unfamiliar topic (cathedrals) can activate low-level learners’ schema of the culturally familiar topic (mosques). The hypothesis of the study was accepted implying that an unfamiliar text, even if it is conceptually similar, cannot activate a culturally familiar schema in the low-level students. This study has pedagogical implications for teaching listening comprehension.

Abstract: The issue of inequality between males and females is a significant phenomenon in the Arabic world. Gender equality and women’s freedom in the Islamic world generally, and the Arabic countries especially have always been questioned. These issues, no doubt, have an impact on the language of men and women. The teachings of the Holy Quran and the prophet Mohammad (PBUH), or let's say how people perceive them play a significant role in shaping the society, especially in a religious city like Holy Najaf where everything is centered on religion, and where the data of this study were collected. However, the understanding and application of these teachings are even more important in regard to putting in action the effects of these teachings on shaping men and women’s language. This research was conducted to look at tag-questions and their different uses by males and females in that Iraqi city. The results were interesting in accordance with the social relationships between men and women and the power relationship coming from the Islamic constitution and the understanding of some men and women of this constitution.

Abstract: Language is a framework that human can participate and share their ideas together. Using different languages created wide ranges of cultures and traditions. In this paper relations between two languages (English and Kurdish) will be explained in term of typology. Linguistic typology is ‘the classification of languages according to their general structure rather than according to their historical or geographical relationship’. It aims at putting forward hypotheses concerning universal characteristics of underlying syntactic categories and structures for both languages, and interrelations between them in one dimension; and identifying their differences morphologically would be another pole. The main objective of the paper serves second language learners of any of two languages do not use their mother tongue structure in speaking target languages; however, understanding the main syntax and morphology of the target language will be more helpful and useful to cope with the learned language easier and faster. The paper brings different pieces of evidence concerning Morphology and Syntax for both languages and each will be illustrated in detail. Later, logical answers will be given to research questions. In the morphological section, different parameters, free and boundary morphemes, and inflectional and derivational morphemes of both languages will be explained by comparing and contrasting each other in both languages. Additionally, in regard to Syntactic variations, word order asymmetries will be identified. Moreover, inside the sections, parameters of both languages` word formations will be analyzed, the effect of intonation on sentence meaning will be explained, helpful tips will be given to learning language however their word orders are different, and finally, the universality of both languages will be proved. Then, a conclusion will sum up the paper in a nutshell.
